Why CSIC participates in IMPRESSIVE?
IMPRESSIVE members at CSIC are Dr. Ana Maria Mancho, Mr. Guillermo Garcia-Sanchez, Dr. Jose Antonio Jimenez-Madrid. They are applied mathematicians who contribute to the project from their expertise in fluid mechanics modeling, and high performance computing.
IMPRESSIVE project emerged from ideas gestated during the collaboration between Antonio G. Ramos at (ULPGC) and Ana M Mancho (CSIC), amid the crisis derived from the oil spill occurred after the sinkage of the Oleg Naydenov fishing ship, close to the coast of Gran Canaria.
The success of their cross-disciplinary collaboration, evidenced that bringing together simultaneously the information captured by different tools and approaches was key for an effective response to these events. Their success consisted that with their analysis of satellite images, and the use of appropriate mathematical tools, they described with extreme accuracy the arrival date of the oil spill to the Gran Canaria coast, also the arrival point, and the oil time evolution and spreading.

This success story inspired IMPRESSIVE, that grow up from their initial partnership. IMPRESSIVE is now a multidisciplinar effort that includes companies, research centers, universities and other stakeholders, with the goal of the developing a universal-relocatable platform that supports the decision making in the response chain to oil spill events based on Copernicus satellite images, CMEMS services downscaled to the coast, and remotely controlled autonomous vehicles, all integrated together into it.
